Application Fields for Oxygen Sensors from Pyro Science

Respirometry

  • incubation of an enclosed sediment, soil, biofilm, plant, animal, algae, plankton, fish, tissue, cell or microbial sample in an airtight closed chamber
  • introduction of a temperature sensor for automatic temperature compensation of oxygen signals
  • detection of the initial oxygen decrease (over time) and calculation of oxygen consumption rate
  • usable oxygen sensors from Pyro Science: e.g. sensors spots glued into closed vials, fixed needle-type sensor, or robust miniprobes.

Photosynthesis

  • incubation of an enclosed phototrophic sediment, biofilm, soil, plant, algae, phytoplankton or cell sample in an airtight closed chamber which is illuminated and tempered
  • introduction of a temperature sensor for automatic temperature compensation of oxygen signals
  • detection of initial oxygen increase (over time) and calculation of net oxygen production rates
  • usable oxygen sensors from Pyro Science: sensor spots, fixed needle-type sensor with protected tip (only for gas phase) or extended tip, or robust miniprobes. If the sensor might be exposed to direct illumination, it is advised to chose sensors with optical isolation.

Microprofiling

  • depth profiling in aqueous (e.g. stratified water bodies) and semi-solid samples like marine and freshwater sediments and biofilms, ice algae, tissue, microbial consortia and mats, soils or above gradient-building surfaces like corals, macroalgae, plant leaves, or tissues
  • in combination with turnkey motorized setups (USB plug&play) for sensor positioning on 3 axes and sensor movements in 1-2 axis with the versatile logging software Profix
  • usable oxygen sensors from Pyro Science: retractable needle-type micro-and minisensors (depending on the spatial resolution needed; from ~100 to 500 µm) or fixed needle-type minisensor

Gas samples

  • gas samples extracted e.g. from a sediment, soil, biofilm, tissue, bioreactor, culture enclosed in a vial with a septum or in a tubing
  • analysis of gases produced after (bio-)chemical reactions or during bioprocessing enclosed in a vial with a septum or in a tubing
  • online-monitoring during gas sampling
  • usable oxygen sensors from Pyro-Science: fixed needle-type sensor with protected tip, sensor spots, flow-through cells

Customized geometries and tissues

  • measurements in customized housings, setups or complex geometries needing flexible sensors
  • for measurements in tissues needing implantable sensors
  • for measurements in low levels of liquids
  • usable oxygen sensors from Pyro Science: bare fiber micro- or minisensor

Growth experiments and culture technology

  • growth experiments of cells, tissues, microbes, fungi, plankton, animals and plant
  • control and monitoring of oxygen content in cultures and growth experiments
  • determination of oxygen content and/or metabolic rates (see also respirometry and photosynthesis) for correlation with growth phase/rate
  • effect of manipulation on activity of cultures
  • usable oxygen sensors from Pyro Science: sensors spots, fixed needle-type sensor with protected tip (gas phase) or extended tip, robust oxygen miniprobe

Bioreactors

  • control and monitoring of oxygen levels (and temperature)
  •  in e.g. batch, fed-batch or continuous or photo-bioreactors
  • in bioreactors with suspended or immobilized (micro-)organisms
  • usable oxygen sensors from Pyro Science: fixed needle-type minisensors with protected (gas phase) or extended tip (aqueous phase), robust oxygen miniprobe
